Episode 7: Running With Scissors
Editing, lying on the floor and hiking for inspiration. π§π»ββοΈ
Welcome to the Pub Dates newsletter! Weβre so glad youβre here.
This newsletter is released as a companion to each podcast episode, and we use it to share the visual elements of our discussion β from mood boards to design sketches, from photos to secret giveaways just for subscribers.
In episode seven, we talked about editing β working with critique partners, how we approach different stages of editing, the techniques we use, and how we know when weβre done. Keep reading to see pictures of some of the editorial tools we discussed!
We also talked about what weβve been up to, and Amie promised pictures of her trip to Kakadu. Here she is, uh, glowing healthily, at the peak of a hike. The weather was so hot that said hike began at 6am, and by 9am she was done for the day!
She also got to take a light plane flight over the park itselfβitβs nearly 20,000 square kilometres (thatβs over 7,600 in miles)βand the scale of this beautiful landscape is staggering. The tiny, tiny distance she covered in that morningβs hike was really put into perspective.
What was she gazing at? Wellβ¦
Now weβve covered the inspiration, on to the editing! Kate talked about the way she cut up her editorial letter, and then reassembled it. We talk about all the reasons for this approach in the episode. Hereβs what that looked like β with a warning that youβll see a few spoilers if you zoom in, so you might just want to admire her artistic stylings from here!
Amie mentioned her trick of having a small deck of index cards, so she can pull out the ones that relate to the chapter sheβs currently working on, and treat them like portable comment bubbles. We talk more about this in the episode, too.
And thatβs all for this episode! Weβll see you next time for an episode weβve very much been looking forward to: A Day In the Life!
I love the idea of the index cards with the few things to always remember! I often think of things like that that I need to sprinkle throughout but haven't figured out a way to remember and implement them. Will definitely be trying this!
Another great episode with another awesome title π!
Loved hearing such detailed explanations of the different editing stages. Thanks again!
